Nelson Bay Dive Sites |
Diving in the Bay is tidal with the best visibility and weakest currents occurring at slack water on High tide. The bay harbours a range of divesites with environments ranging from shallow seagrass meadows to deep sponge gardens.
The exposed coastline of Port Stephens stretches from Tomaree Head down to the Stockton Sand Dunes. In between there are a number of rocky reef platforms and small headlands which can be dived from the shore when the conditions are right. These sites typically consist of areas of round exposed rocks and meadows of kelp and other algae.

Just outside the Port Stephens heads are four islands which offer a diverse range of diving on walls, sponge gardens and fields of boulders. The islands are Fingal Island, Boondelbah Island, Little Island, and Cabbage Tree Island. A little further North there is Broughton Island which offers outstanding diving with several sites offering Grey Nurse Shark aggregations.
